INFORMATION ON THE FRONT COVER PICTURE

COVER PICTURE: "Oak Apple."

Oak Apple Day or Royal Oak
Day was a holiday celebrated
in England on 29 May to
commemorate the restoration of
the English monarchy, in May
1660. In some parts of the country,
the day was also known as Shick
Shack Day, Oak and Nettle Day or
Arbor Tree Day.
In 1660, Parliament declared 29
May a public holiday:"Parliament
had ordered the 29 of May, the
King's birthday, to be for ever kept
as a day of thanksgiving for our
redemption from tyranny and the
King's return to his Government,
he entering London that day." The
public holiday, Oak Apple Day, was
formally abolished in 1859, but the date
retains some significance in local or
institutional customs. It is, for example,
kept as Founder's Day in the Royal
Hospital Chelsea (founded by Charles
II in 1681). Traditional celebrations to
commemorate the event often entailed
the wearing of oak apples (a type of
plant gall, possibly known in some
parts of the country as a shick-shack, or
sprigs of oak leaves, in reference to the
occasion after the Battle of Worcester in
September 1651, when the future Charles
II of England escaped the Roundhead
army by hiding in an oak tree near
Boscobel House. Anyone who failed to
wear a sprig of oak risked being pelted
with bird's eggs or thrashed with nettles.
These ceremonies, which have
now largely died out, are perhaps
continuations of pre-Christian nature
worship. The Garland King who
rides through the streets ofCastleton,
Derbyshire, at the head of a procession,
completely disguised in a garland
of flowers, which is later affixed
to a pinnacle on the parish church
tower, can have little connection
with the Restoration, even though
he dresses in Stuart costume. He
is perhaps a kind of Jack in the
Green and the custom may have
transferred fromMay Day when
such celebrations were permitted
again after having been banned by
the Puritans.
Events still take place at Uptonupon-
Severn, Northampton, Aston
on Clun in Shropshire, Marsh
Gibbon in Buckinghamshire,
Great Wishford in Wiltshire when
villagers gather wood in Grovely Wood,
and Membury in Devon. The day is
generally marked by re-enactment
activities at Moseley Old Hall, one of
the houses where Charles II hid in 1651.
At some Oxford and Cambridge halls
a toast is still drunk to celebrate Oak
Apple Day.

The Year of the Dragon 2012

Astrology is part of Chinese life. In Chinese astrology dragon people excel. The dragon Chinese zodiac year is special.
Many people are looking forward to the Chinese zodiac year of 2012.
Astrology is so important to the Chinese and the Chinese year of the dragon is so special.
Think about the dragon!
In Chinese astrology the dragon is the only animal of the Chinese zodiac year that is not real.
In Chinese astrology the dragon is quite special and very much revered.
The dragon holds special significance for the Chinese people.
More than 4,000 years ago, there were two large tribes and many smaller tribes in China. The tribes had animals as emblems. The two large tribes unified and chose the dragon as their symbol. In fact, the Han Chinese still call themselves the descendants of the Dragon.
In Chinese astrology the dragon was seen as a powerful almighty king because it was made up of different parts of animals such as a tiger, fish, snake and an eagle.
The Chinese dragon was not seen as a threatening evil being as we do in the west - rather a symbol of power, superiority and rule.
Still today, the Dragon is a revered symbol. You can see many sculptures and carvings of the dragon. Even today, the Chinese associate the dragon with power and wisdom.
In Chinese astrology a dragon person is special. Born in the Chinese Year of the Dragon they usually stand out as befits a dragon. They are powerful and wise.
In a group of people, "the Chinese Year of the Dragon person" stands out. There is a certain aura about them.
They certainly are not shy – they demand attention and respect. The dragon is a symbol of power.
Therefore in Chinese astrology the dragon person born under this Chinese Zodiac sign tends to be a "doer" – they do things and achieve power by getting things done.
A dragon can breathe out fire so the person born in the Chinese Year of the Dragon can be a hothead. Watch out if you make them angry!
However, the dragon has a soft underbelly and so in Chinese astrology the dragon person born in this Chinese Zodiac year has a "soft spot" to them. They may get angry at someone who annoys them but they also show great compassion to people in need.
A dragon has a long tongue which is often seen. So in Chinese astrology the dragon person born in this Chinese Zodiac year has a sharp tongue –they will say things that can be quite sarcastic and biting.
The person born in the Chinese Year of the Dragon can be quite a confronting person but if you can reach their "soft heart" they are worthwhile allies.

The aim of the magazine is to provide readers with various articles some serious some humorous so that there is something of interest for everyone. We have found since moving here from the South of Spain that there is a lack of places to promote and advertise any business you may have. We are therefore offering this magazine as a solution.

We welcome any suggestions of what you would like to see in the magazine as well as distribution areas we may have missed. Any articles of local interest or details of upcoming events can be submitted.

IT IS NOT A MIRACLE BUT IT SEEMS LIKE ONE.
Carmen and Anna of ARCA animal refuge have driven to Carrefour every day apart from Sundays to buy water to clean the kennels and water for the dogs for TWO AND A HALF years ,now after all that time they finally have the water and electricity connected, Carmen once said to me Mave it will never happen, they are so happy, it is wonderful to see them so excited about it, this was made possible by Matthew and Debbie of The Olive Press, they persevered and found the right organisation to make this happen. Carmen and Anna cannot thank them enough, they also want to thank Lesley and John Cottingham for donating an automatic washing machine, and Doreens husband Peter Gallaway for doing all the plumbing and donating the sink and kitchen units, a Spanish couple have donated a new water heater, so now when the vets return from Holland to do the next spay and neutering project they will be very happy to find the conditions for them to work in so much better. Once again many many thanks to Matthew and Debbie. OH. by the way, after telling a gentleman about this at the Bar Estacion , he asked if he adopted 6 or more dogs from ARCA, could Matthew and Debbie get the electricity and water on at his finca in the campo. now THAT WOULD BE A MIRACLE.
Thanks, Mave and all from ARCA

URGENT ADOPTION REQUIRED CALLED ARCA TODAY

A.R.C.A. (Association for Refuge and Taking care of the Animals) it is a non-profit association operating since the summer of year 2001. It is dedicated to protect and to defend the abandoned animals.

They are a small number of volunteers who try to protect the well-being of the dogs and look after them until they can find a home for them.

They try to make sure that they are adopted and they obtain the best possible home.

Also they want to make people more responsible for the animals so that the quantity of abandonments is reduced. They also micro chip the dogs and sterilize them .

At this moment they have 300 left dogs.

They are in Tortosa in the province of Tarragona (Spain). But it does not matter where they come from nor the distance as the dogs need aid and the best aid is that they have shelter and food.

All the material aid comes from the donations, thanks to them we can survive but with each new arrival the more donations are needed. If you want  to donate to Arca  if only by 5 € each month, minimum, please send an e-mail with your personal data and account number or call or write. Or just become a volunteer to help with the dogs.

NOW HOMED-These two puppies have been abandoned in the last two weeks. The one on the right is a female and the fluffy one is a male. They are about nine weeks old and will be quite big dogs. Unfortunately, due to their size, if homes are not found in the next few weeks they are likely to be with us for life! They are very friendly and used to people and are wormed and vaccinated. It's not their fault their mum's owner was irresponsible! Please help them.

If you are interested in these or any other dog please phone:
