RESULTS OF THE MEETING:

...the meeting apart from some technical hic-cups was well attended given the present circumstances. In a way the present circumstances are more difficult than they were in 2000 – the present governments (Spain and Catalunya) are concealing their intentions in the small print regarding the transferring of more water from the River Ebro to Castellon, Valencia, Barcelona and Tarragona etc. etc. Consequently it is, maybe, more difficult to inspire the people to attend PDE meetings and demonstrations – now. But – we will see – you never know in life. And also it depends on the PDEs flexibility in ways to inspire and communicate to the folk of the Lands of the Ebro – the urgency of the situation! It was announced in the Assemblia that we will have a Demonstration in Barcelona on 30th May 2010 with the support of important ecological organizations.

Firstly, I wish to congratulate you and your team on your readable magazine – jam packed with all sorts of goodies. My friend Brid (“Journey” therapist) told me about it – and so off I went to ferr. Garcia for a copy.

I am sending you the English version of the letter to the editor published in Catalan last Friday in La Veu de L’Ebre. The Plataforma en Defensa de L’Ebre has its Assemblia on 20th of this month and it is important that as many people come as possible – including English speaking – that is why I am sending this letter to you now!

Assemblia of the PDE in Tortosa – 20th February!

“ NO OPTIONS - EBRENCS I EBRENCAS” – BACK TO THE STREETS!

Today I met Manel Olle in Tortosa. He said he will never forget (because it is engraved in his memory) the great uprising of the people of the Lands of the Ebro in defense of the river and its delta.
I replied - “ I believe it is the responsibility of the people through whose territory flows a great river to defend and care for it”. “ If we do not act. what are we going to leave to our children and grandchildren and future generations “– he responded.
Hanging on the wall of my studio, I still have the great inspirational drawing of Frederic Mauri “Ex-Libris – Plataforma en Defensa de L’Ebre” – with Lo Nus hovering over the River Ebro which is flowing through the Delta – from the Mayor calendar of 2006. If ever there was a drawing to inspire us to continue our struggle and insist, insist and continue to insist on our “right” to have a “cabal minim” for the River Ebro, this is it!
But there is more – below the drawing ,are these words by Manel Olle –
“Homenatge a la Plataforma en Defensa de L’Ebre,
que s’esforca i treballa per a que
guanye el sentit comu i la justicia
I es puga evitar la pillastrada
de l’espoliacio del riu ja prou malmes ara
i al mateix temps, salvar el Delta magnific,
Pero d’una fragilitat extraordinaria.”

Manel has put into words, into a poem, what we all know intuitively, that the magnificient Delta is extraordinarily fragile and it totally depends on the River Ebro for its survival. That is why we are demanding from the responsible administrations a “cabal minim” for its survival!
But they don’t give it – why not? Ah- they say – it all depends on the demand for water. What is the implication behind these words? The implication is the selling of the water. The further implication is that the responsible administrations and governing bodies of Catalunya and Spain primarily regard the River Ebro as a supply of cheap primary energy (water) to the cities and areas which they favour in detriment to The Lands of the Ebro. Plus the fact that by controlling the water (through travases) they sell the water and obtain great benefits. In other words they treat the people of the Lands of the Ebro as “tontos” , as dumb animals ready and willing to go to the slaughter! You think I am exagerating ? - we only have to look at Tarragona – and see its expansion thanks to very cheap water from the Ebro.i Look, it’s obvious, if our local politicians don’t put the defense of their territory in front of their political obligations – AND THEY HAVE NOT – AND THEY WILL NOT- then we have “to take the bull by the horns” and DEMONSTRATE IN THE STREETS. We say that the ecological survival of the river and delta must come first before any demand for water for new residential, industrial or recreational developments etc etc.
So, where is the meeting point between these two points of view. There is no meeting point – after years and years of presentations by hydraulic experts insisting that the Ebro and Delta need a minimum amount of water to survive and therefore a “cabal minim” has to be stipulated “ officially” – the water authorities and governments of Catalunya and Spain continue going their own way and to hell with the ecological survival of Spain’s and of course Catalunya’s greatest river and its delta! The PDE in its presentations has always been polite and I am trying to be polite, but there comes a point when you are dealing with certain people that stronger words are far more appropriate.
The message , loud and clear from the authorities that we have been and still are appealing to is “Fuck you and your demands for a cabal minim and Fuck the Lands of the Ebro because this territory means nothing to Catalunya”. At the Reunion Informativo on 9th January at the Cambra de Comerc en Tortosa Manolo Tomas explained in his “no pulling the punches” speech, this fundamental confrontation, far more eloquently than I have done. After his “explanation of the situation” there were no questions - no questions were needed – all was clear - clear as the cold sweat on the brow of a person condemned to death.
We have to act – “ebrencs and ebrencas” , “flamencs who went to Brussells”, the call is out - men and women, grandmothers and grandfathers and teenagers, we have to organize and massively attend demonstrations wherever needed. Once again we have to fight for our territory – the Lands of the Ebro – to defend our river and delta and demand our legitimate right to a “cabal minim”.
Wherever we have to go – we will go there!

All Angles Short Story Collection

Catalonia’s growing English language literary scene will take another step forward in the next year with plans for a collection of short stories in English, with Catalan translations, to be published by Arola Editors of Tarragona. This is being co-ordinated by Paul Connell, organiser of the Tarragona writers group ‘All Angles’ in conjunction with other writers groups in Catalonia. There are now established groups for writers in Girona, Barcelona and Tarragona.

‘We are looking for short fictional stories in English, between 1500 and 3500 words,’ said Paul, ‘on any subject or theme but with some Catalan connection in its setting, characters or plot. We want to illustrate the diversity of styles and approaches to writing in English in Catalonia and also the range of ways in which the short story format can be used; from a mini-novel with its own story arc to a miniaturist portrait of an incident or moment. We’d like to have the book on the market in time for St Jordi 2011.’

The submission requirements and all details will be posted on the All Angles group website at http://webfacil.tinet.org/allangles . Stories should be submitted by the end of May 2010.

ARCA the dog refuge was broken into twice recently, on Christmas eve over 30 large bags of dog food were stolen so the poor dogs had no food over Christmas and then on Boxing day 2 large dog kennels were stolen from outside...therefore more funds are desperately needed plus volunteers as a couple are moving away to help with the dogs even just a few hours per week, it is very rewarding work and the dogs are so grateful. Background to the Square & Compass Club of Spain

The Club was formed on the 24th April 2006 by a group of 6 retired freemasons. The concept is based on the American High Twelve and Square and Compass Clubs, which were formed for American Servicemen, who were Freemasons serving in a foreign country away from their homeland, and as such this idea was adopted for the Square and Compass Club of Spain. Contrary to the views of some, Freemasonry is not a secret society but a society with secrets, but during the last 5 to 6 years Freemasonry has been encouraged to show more openness and transparency.

Most of our members have retied to Spain, but still retain their links with fellow Masons in the UK, practising the same principles. Charity has always been at the forefront, being ever mindful of the needs of others less fortunate.

Our membership currently stands at 40, and continues to grow in strength, with Dutch, German, Spanish and British, making it a cordial and diverse membership. The Club is conducted without the formality of Lodge proceedings, but still retaining masonic ideals for those who treasure their masonic values without compromise.

Everyone, unlike at formal Lodge meetings, plays a much valued and essential part of the clubs success with great enthusiasm and input. We all meet every month for lunch, at different restaurants, to enjoy valued communication, and enjoyable social company. During these luncheons we hold raffles, book sales and give all our loose change to a ‘copper pot’ - all generously donated by Masons, non masonic friends and guests alike.

This has enabled the Square and Compass Club of Spain to make a donation of a 1000 euros to our selected charity, a much needed new Day Centre in Benicarlo, for local people (Benicarlo, Alcala de Xivert, Vinaroz, Calig and Peniscola) affected by cerebral damage.

DECIBELS

The Decibels are a choir group of singers from Ampolla, El-Perello, Moira and L'Ametlla area. They are multi-nationality and they sing for fun in the hope of spreading some joy among mixed audiences.

All are welcome to come and listen and be entertained.

The Decibels also sing at functions such as the Perello Honey Festival in April, The Ampolla Craft Market in June, Calafat August fiesta etc.

What is the English-Speaking group? – The group was originally started over three years ago as the ‘English-Speaking Network‘ the name was recently changed as several prospective members thought it was solely a computer-based network; it’s not.
The iESG provides a social-networking facility for English-speaking people living in the vicinity of L’Ametlla de Mar. The ESG comprises friendly people of all nationalities and ages who speak English and enjoy each other’s company.
What’s our Aim? - Our social activities enable people to meet, and to encourage good-will between the local community and newcomers to the area (we have members who live in El Perelló and L’Ampolla). At times we can offer advice and assistance based on our own experience; in addition the ‘Problem Surgery’ at El Perelló has also kindly offered their support on a case-by-case basis.
Who are the members? - Members have included American, Catalan, Dutch, English, German, Norwegian & Swiss.
What do we do? - We organise various activities based on members’ wishes. Further suggestions are always welcome, but may require volunteers to organise them!

A BIT OF ENGLISH ON THE RADIO.

“FROM MY POINT OF VIEW” on the Cala Radio 107.3

I don’t know if any other town or village in the Tarragona province has any sort of local radio programme broadcast in English. I suspect that no-one in other towns or villages in the Tarragona province knows that we have one here in l’Ametlla de Mar.

“From My Point of View” isn’t just a programme for the British or the English speaking ex pats. And it isn’t just in English.

We are trying a bit of an experiment. We are trying to bring British people who live or visit here together with local people – be they Catalan or Spanish. And vice-versa. We try to take a look at various aspects of cultural activity and we try to see what similarities and differences there are when looked at from a British, a Catalan and a Spanish point of view.

I try and keep some sort of order about the whole thing.

So, hopefully, even if you only have a smattering of Catalan or Spanish, or if you are Catalan or Spanish and only have a smattering of English, you should be able to follow the general gist of each programme.

So far we have looked at choral singing – with the help of Tony the leader of “The Decibels”; a choir that sings mainly in English but that now sees itself as multinational. Vic, a British member of both The Decibels and the Ametlla choir, joined us in the studio with Joan Marc, a well known Ametlla musician, and Natalia, a local Catalan who has no music training and no fear about singing when she feels like it.

Football was fascinating. Although we had “Tío Jepus” an ex pro who once actually scored against his beloved Barcelona – the emphasis was on how the supporters view the whole theatre that is modern football. We talked from how we admire the magnificent skills on show through to how we despise the money that seems to swilling about within clubs, while fans have to fork out a relative fortune to follow their team.

“Gastronomy” – there’s got to be discussion here. “Chicken Tikka Masala” compared with “Seitó amb Amanida.” Then there is “The Press.” “The Health Service.”

They have to be interesting in whatever language.

If you don’t live in l’Ametlla, you can listen online via the Town Hall website. (Google “l’ametlla de mar” then enter through “El Portal Oficial” and click on “La Cala Ràdio.”)

It is a new venture for us here in l’Ametlla de Mar and we need both input and feedback.
